Based on reports the Brazilian National Observatory (BNO) is quoted by the Daily Mail on Sunday (28/08/2011), the river is located approximately 3 kilometers beneath the Amazon it has closer to 6,000 kilometers long, or nearly throughout the Amazon itself (6800 kilometers).
According to Dr. Hamza Valiya of BNO, the discovery of an underground river came to light thanks to the study of temperature variation on the 241 inactive oil wells were excavated in the period 1970 to 1980 by the state oil company, Petrobras.
That information allows the team of researchers led by Dr. Hamza identify the movement of water at approximately 3 kilometers beneath the Amazon River. The discovery itself was presented by Hamza at the Brazilian Geophysical Society meeting in Rio de Janeiro last week.
Reportedly, the river will be called Hamza, in honor of scientist who headed the research that allow the identification of these rivers.
Dr. Hamza asserted that the study of the underground river is still in its early stages, but he believes that research results can be enjoyed at the end of 2014.
However, Dr. Hamza refused to comment on questions about the environmental impact and economic existence of this river.
